Red Red Wine

If you love red, red wine
you'll love OxiClean
!
The great, if not easy to poke fun of, Neil Diamond wrote and recorded "Red Red Wine" in 1968. It was more famously covered by UB40 in 1983. Whether you like this song or prefer one version over the other I'm most certain you would NOT like red, red wine spilled on your NYE outfit.

Many of us will be imbibing in red wine on NYE and spills happen people! You already know the party spillers you'll be surrounded by so do your best to keep your distance from the spiller, unless the spiller is you! More importantly if a spill happens make sure you have OxiClean, a fashionista's best friend, close at hand. No, OxiClean is not a sponsor of Style Cents but man does Style Cents love that OxiClean!

Drink your red wine, have a happy and safe new year, keep your OxiClean in your back pocket (okay, that would actually be a fashion faux pas, but keep nearby) and you'll Love What You Wear!

Closing Of The Year

Remember the movie "Toys" released in 1992? If you do you may also remember the fabulous song "Closing Of The Year" by Wendy and Lisa. It's worth a watch and listen. I always have it in my music rotation on New Year's Eve. And speaking of NYE and the closing of the year, it seems like a good time to make sure you have your closet closed to these fashion don'ts as you enter 2012:

Don't close the year
with this look!

  1. Short Shirts- nothing says 1999 like a short short. Make sure the hem of your top hits at hip level. The shorter the shirt the more likely the belly alarm may sound. Plus the short shirt is a great hip enhancer- if that doesn't convince you to go longer nothing will!
  2. Mom Jeans- if you're sporting a light wash jean that comes to your belly button, or god forbid, above your belly button, cease and desist immediately! March to to the store and find some dark wash jeans with a mid-rise and toast to the new year and the new you!
  3. Super Low Jeans- crack kills. Especially the aging variety.
  4. Mom Shoes- there is no excuse for a frumpy shoe these days. Even comfort brands make cute boots and shoes so unless you're a nurse cut it out. There is no quicker way to ruin an outfit than to finish it off with less than stylish footwear.
  5. Colorless Outfits- we're all attracted to grey and black and there's nothing wrong with that. There is, however, something wrong with wearing only these colors everyday. Come on, branch out even if it's just adding a colorful accessory to breathe life into your anemic wardrobe.
Honorable Mention-
Skirt and Dress hemlines that hit below the knee- this isn't a hard and fast rule for everyone but for 90% of us it is. Be very careful when your hemline falls below the knee, it can turn you into a nun in a hot minute, especially if you are petite.

The closing of the year is a time to reflect on all the great things from the past 365 days. It's also a time of hope and opportunity as we look at the year ahead. May the closing of your year be a perfect blend of past present and future and may you Love What You Wear!

My Favorite Things

Ahhh, The Sound of Music and Julie Andrews singing "My Favorite Things", good stuff! Most everyone has positive memories surrounding this 1965 movie and song. What were your favorite style memories in 2011? Wait, did I just hear someone ask me what my favorite style memories were? Well, since you asked:
Whether it's 2011 or 2012
a cropped jacket will always
be a favorite thing!
  1. Cotton Jersey Scarf- I wore mine several times a week- whether it was on my way to a workout or to the grocery store. So easy to tie, so comfy and warm, all while adding easy going flair.
  2. Cropped Black Jacket- can't live without it! Goes with everything and hits mid-torso for a great slimming effect. You can find one most anywhere.
  3. Skinny Jeans- I have three pair and I'm not sure that's even enough! Can't wait for spring when I'll be rolling them up once or twice to wear with cute flats or wedges. I hope this trend that's been around for some time continues it's longevity.
  4. Boots- duh. Love tucking my leggings and skinny jeans into them. Love them with skirts and dresses. Love them with most everything but a swimsuit. Love flat, wedge and chunky heeled boots. And the cowboy boot? Yes, please!
  5. Bracelets- layer, layer, layer- there are never enough.  Put dainty styles with chunky versions and watch the magic happen.
  6. Floral Chiffon Blouse- this trend is so fun to juxtapose with a tougher look like a studded leather bracelet. Prim and tough- great combo. I especially like the v-neck tie variety which is lovely paired with a motorcycle style jacket, skinny jeans and boots.
  7. Tunic Top- what could be better with your favorite leggings and skinny jeans? Enough said.
  8. Patterned Hoisery- these can breathe new life and modern flair into otherwise ho-hum skirts and dresses. I've got big plans to get a bit bolder with this trend in 2012.
  9. Oxford Shoe- love my Miz Mooz chunky heel version. Putting these in my footwear rotation kept me from wearing boots EVERY day. Pairing them with a white button down and cardigan- nice! And did I mention how comfy?
  10. New Hairstyle- sporting a new do is fun even if you don't like it as well as your last do. Change is good and helps spur innovative ideas for your whole look.
Say goodbye to 2011 but take your favorite things into 2012, perhaps in new, fun ways. When you do you'll Love What You Wear!

Muffin Top

A 2010 episode of 30 Rock showcased the hilarious video of  Jenna singing "Muffin Top"- worth a watch and frankly a subject worth discussing. Oh, how we hate the muffin top and how it affects the fit of our jeans, our tops and the much dreaded swimsuit. Soooo, what can those of us that carry this treat with us at all times do?
This ruching makes people say, "what muffin top?"

Oh, there are so many ways to hide your muffin top. Let us count the top five strategies:

  1. Almighty ruching- the muffin top's VERY best friend. Ruched tops and dresses are a miraculous design certainly invented by a woman and hide a multitude of sins. Add a subtle pattern and where is the MT?
  2.  Wide belt- although the belt can be scary, you'd be surprised how the perfect width of a belt hits you in all the right places to hide your less appreciated area.
  3. Long Scarf or Necklace- never underestimate the power of drawing the eye to something pretty. We humans are easily distracted and a pretty scarf or necklace definitely begs for attention while distracting from the MT.
  4.  Mid-rise jeans- don't get me wrong, I'm not talking mom jeans here. I'm talking about a nice mid-rise jean that sucks in the area that needs some sucking. Listen Dorothy- you're not in Kansas anymore AND you're not 25 either. Time to face facts, the super-low jean is for your niece or daughter not you!
  5.  Confidence- yep, you heard it here, confidence sells and is a great distracter- really! Muffin top or not, you always look your best when you carry yourself and dress yourself with confidence!

Love your body but do your best to make the most of what you've got and You'll Love What You Wear!

Hot Legs

These wide calf boots can be ordered
from Zappos and are perfect for every day!
It was 1978 and Rod Stewart released his single "Hot Legs". Man, that was a long time ago. But most of us remember the song. And we probably did have hot legs back then, eh? Many women I talk with these days, however, complain about how their legs- hot or not- don't fit into boots.

Getting boots zipped around the calf can definitely be an issue. And want to have a pair of jeans tucked in? That can further complicate the matter. Of course I contend this doesn't mean you are "hot legs free", it mostly means the ding dongs making these boots have lost their minds! It's heartbreaking (drama intended) to think of a good woman going through a Pacific Northwest winter without a good boot! So don't give up. Not all boots are created with the toothpick calf in mind- keep the search alive. Look for boots that have a panel at the top that allows for some growth. Or check out boots specifically created for a larger calf here- lots of options!

Don't let the pesky makers of boots make you lose sight of your hot legs. Procure some cute boots just for your hot legs and you'll Love What You Wear!

Arms

The interesting neckline and tie belt of this
dress draw the eye away from the dreaded arms
(the length should be above the knee though)
The song "Arms" by Christina Perri is so lovely. She released it this year and it's definitely worth listening to if you haven't already. While this song has nothing to do with the epidemic of women who hate their arms the title definitely reminds me of this fact!

The past year I have heard the "I hate my arms" complaint over and over again. Holiday dresses and tops are often sleeveless which makes this time of year all the more disconcerting for the arm haters among us. So, what do you do if you don't count your arms as one of your finest assets?

The term "smoke and mirrors" comes to mind. If you don't like your arms add something to detract from them. If you are going sleeveless add a fun necklace or scarf to the mix so the eye is drawn to those accessories rather than your arms. Wear a fantastic belt that accentuates the smallest part of your body and voila, who cares about those arms! The name of the game is drawing attention to the areas you love to detract attention from the less liked areas.

Avoid always wearing a cardigan or jacket to hide your arms- embrace them (pun intended)! Wearing something over your sleeveless outfit often destroys the great line and style of the garment. Come on, just try going sleeveless and see what happens- you may fall in love with your arms all over again, or, um, for the first time!

Go sleeveless with pride and confidence while accentuating the positive and you'll Love What You Wear!

Comfort Zone

Uncomfortable wearing scarves? Just Do It!
Waaay back in 1991 Vanessa Williams released a song called "Comfort Zone". If you watch the video you'll be simultaneously entertained and mortified. I do believe there's a reason Ms. Williams isn't topping the charts these days. But just because Vanessa isn't making great music doesn't mean you can't move a bit out of your comfort zone and create some great outfits!

Have you ever put something on and said, "I really like this but it's not what I usually wear". Umm, that may be just the point! Perhaps you should give what you really like a try even if it means you have to push yourself out of your comfort zone. Oh, what's that old saying? I know, I know- "Comfort zones are most often expanded through discomfort"- Peter McWilliams.

So, go all Nike with your wardrobe and "Just Do it". When you get out of your comfort zone you'll Love What You Wear!

Have a Holly Jolly Christmas

This sparkling cuff is a whopping
$10.80 at Forever 21 and adds
fun without fret to any holiday outfit!
It is officially the holiday season. And what Christmas would be complete without Burl Ives' "Holly Jolly Christmas" somewhere on that holiday mix? When it comes to fashion, the holidays can be a bit stressful. There's nothing that will get women in more of a frenzy than the hunt for a perfect holiday outfit. The process can be anything but jolly!

This year take a deep breath, head to your closet and see what you have before you panic. Is there a dress, top or skirt that you wore last year or a couple years ago that could be revamped with different jewelry, hosiery or footwear? If you have many events to attend maybe you treat yourself to a new dress and work with what you already own for the remaining soirees. And don't forget the age old "phone a friend option". It can sometimes take a village to dress for the season! Imitation is the highest form of flattery so your gal pal will love that you ask to borrow some seasonal flair.

Save some money, save some stress and definitely have a Holly Jolly (Stylish) Christmas and you'll Love What You Wear!

The Groundhog Day Song

Don't let this guy stand in the way
of dressing well each day!
Yep, there's a Groundhog Day Song. Who knew? I suggest you listen to this masterpiece. Well, only if you have time to waste! I know we can all feel like we're living in the Groundhog day movie, doing the same things day in and day out. Dressing each day can feel a bit Groundhogday'esque. I hear, "I don't know what to wear" or "I hate getting dressed in the morning" from a lot of people. This is often the excuse for dressing in less than stellar clothing.

While I understand that getting dressed may not be the highlight of your day it certainly shouldn't seem like drudgery. Everyone who chooses not to live in a nudist colony is tasked with the processes of daily dressing. If you have to get dressed each day why not look good? It takes the same amount of time to put on ill-fitting, unattractive clothing as it does to don clothing that fits well and makes you feel great.

When you go to your closet that is not located in a nudist colony tomorrow morning, make choices that boost your looks and help you feel good. Why not? You will, after all, be wearing those clothes for several hours. And you just never know when George Clooney might visit your home or office- just sayin'.

Don't let Groundhog day syndrome stand in the way of dressing well. Shoot that groundhog right between the eyes and Love What You Wear!

Good Life

Good Life!
This Thanksgiving week I'd like to take a break from the fashion musings normally found here for a heart check rather than the usual boot or scarf check. As I heard the song "Good Life" today, released almost exactly a year ago in 2010 by New Republic, I couldn't help but think about what "Good Life" means as we head into the holiday season.

I know we're all grateful for the Good Life. I also know how we can lose sight of the things that make our lives great. Living in the Pacific Northwest is high on the list of things to be thankful for. What an amazing place- even if the weather can be less than stellar it sure creates majestic scenery. Oh, and how about all the boots and scarves we get to wear when the inclimate weather is upon us? Oh, but there I go digressing onto fashion...

How about the fantastic families we come from? And the families we've made? I consider my family not only my husband and kids but also the friends that make our family better than it would be otherwise. Having a roof overhead with heat and a bed to sleep in- all worthy basics we take for granted. Now's the time to remember how fortunate we are.

So cheers to the Good Life! For great families, good friends, yummy food and celebrations. So many reasons to be thankful. Take the time this week to concentrate on the things that make you happy and leave the rest for next week. And, while we're at it, we might as well wear something cute (and expandable) this Thanksgiving. Love What You Wear (and be thankful!).

One Love

This is the kind of love that
stands the test of time!

Don't hate me because I'm about to talk about a Pat Benatar song! Back in 1988 the song "One Love" was a vinyl release on Pat Benatar's "Wide Awake in Dreamland" album. Bear with me. Listen to this song! And while we're on the subject, what is your closet One Love? Okay, maybe not one love but the thing you can't live without? Is it your favorite boots, jacket, belt or scarf? Please don't say it's your sweats!

We all have that closet One Love, and we don't necessarily have to get rid of it, even if we've had it awhile. After all, long term relationships should be celebrated! What you should think about is how you can put a spin on your One Love item. If it's a jacket, perhaps it's time to roll up the sleeves if you haven't done that before or think of different tops or dresses to put beneath it. Have you worn it with a skirt in the past? Maybe that's just the combination needed to freshen things up. How about your favorite boots? Do you just wear them with jeans? I bet they'd look great with a dress that's hanging in your closet, perhaps making the dress more casual for a Seattle style date night?

Just like the one love in your life, the one love in your closet needs some attention and perhaps a new perspective. Think about it. Take care of your closet One Love and You'll Love What You Wear!

Black Brown and Beige

These black/brown combos
are as well composed as a
Duke Ellington tune!
Well, what a handy song title. "Black Brown and Beige" was written by Duke Ellington in 1943. It refers to a very heavy subject. I, however, would like to discuss something not so heavy. When I'm not busy strategizing my world peace plan I ponder the age old question, "do black and brown really go together?"

The answer is a resounding YES! I believe the people who combine these two colors are the clever fashionistas among us. Those black boots can easily be mixed with brown elements in other parts of your outfit and vice versa. The less matchy, matchy your outfit the more interesting it is and shows your creativity.

That's right folks- dressing is a bit of an art form. You are a walking canvas so start painting and don't be afraid to mix your black, brown and beige. When you do you'll Love What You Wear!

A Fool For Your Stockings

Yes, it's true, "A Fool For Your Stockings" is really a song. Really. It was the B-side of ZZ Top's hit single "Legs" released in 1984. Although "A Fool For your Stockings" is not a well known tune, the cool stockings and patterned tights available today are definitely an accessory for which you should be in tune!
Don't be a fool, decorate your legs!

Having a few pair of patterned hose and/or tights can add flair to your wardrobe. Do you have a great solid colored dress or skirt? Add some funky leg wear to the mix with your favorite boots/booties or heels and suddenly your otherwise blah outfit shows personality.

Virtually all colors and patterns are fair game. If, however, you are new to the funky stockings game you may want to begin with black or gray and get more colorful as your comfort level builds.

Go ahead- decorate those legs, you never know who will be a fool for your stockings and You'll Love What You Wear!

Lost In My Mind

The boot that currently has me
"Lost In My Mind"
Ooh, I really love this song. "Lost In My Mind" was released this year by a Seattle band called The Head and The Heart. A great tune that's part of a very cool album- check it out.

There are so many ways I get lost in my mind. There's the really important things that find me mulling and there are the less serious things that get me thinking. As you might imagine I get lost in my mind thinking about my next great boot purchase. There's always room for another pair of boots in the closet (well, not really, but I'm always willing to make room). My husband often wonders why another pair? It's difficult for him to understand the many ways boots can be worn- with jeans, leggings, skirts, dresses. Then there are the various types of jeans, leggings, skirts and dresses that add even further complication and, quite frankly, the NEED (okay, want) for more boots!

I have happily possessed many of the boots in my closet for years and they are still in high rotation. A good pair will last nearly a lifetime. If there's an area of your wardrobe where a splurge is in order it's for a quality pair of boots.

Get lost in your mind dwelling on your next boot find. Sport them all fall, winter and spring and You'll Love What You Wear!

Celebration

Could this dress be at your
local consignment shop? Now that
would be something to celebrate!
You know it's on your mind. The season for celebrating is drawing near. Madonna, the queen of pop, released her song "Celebration" in 2009. The opening lyrics of "come join the party, let's get it started" are quite fitting for what YOU need to do- get your holiday dress shopping started, beat the crowds!

Is consignment shopping not your bag? Stop reading here. Do you enjoy a good consignment treasure? Read on:

If there is ever a good reason for consignment shopping, looking for a special occasion outfit is it. Think about it. Most people wear their "celebration dress" once or twice and then don't want to wear it again. So when you go to a consignment shop (or even thrift store) what you're looking at is practically new. You've just got to hope that the previous owner was a coordinated red wine drinker rather than the village party spiller.

So open your mind to consignment and thrift shopping this holiday season and you'll find you don't have to open your wallet so far! And let's face it, if you save money on the dress there just might be more money for those shoes you've been eyeing. Shoes are much more versatile than your celebration dress!

Think consignment and thrift for your next celebration and You'll Love What You Wear (and what you save)!

Animal

Stop horsing around-
Get to H&M for this tunic!
It was 1987 and all was right with the world. Many of us were safely tucked away on college campuses in that lovely "in-between" time of life when we had some responsibility but not too much! Oh, those were the days. But I digress. It was also the year Def Leppard released their single "Animal". The menagerie of animals present on clothing and accessories today is as prevalent as Def Leppard hits were in the 80's and 90's!

You just can't shop these days without hearing the faint hoot of an owl calling from the accessories department or the whinny of a horse coming from a rounder of blouses. I'm pretty sure you can almost always hear tigers and leopards roaring (do they roar?) no matter what year it is. Even the bark of dogs can be heard from a trendy top here and there. And everyone knows, when in doubt, put a bird on it!

So enjoy the fun of this fashion menagerie. I wouldn't suggest a closet full of these critters but why not go on the hunt for your favorite animal tunic, dress or top. It's fun, it's up-to-date and gosh darn it who doesn't love animals?

Get in on the animal fashion trend and You'll Love What You Wear!

Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Crazy dressing is for the stage!
Freddie Mercury wrote "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" in 1979 and as you recall it was quite a big hit! You will also recall that Freddie Mercury was a bit of a crazy dresser/costumer!

This idea of dressing crazy to the point of costuming brings up an important style note. Dressing with originality and flare is fantastic. Dressing as if you are going to a costume party dressed as a crazy person, well, not so much. I notice now and then (well, quite a bit really) that there are those among us who take the originality a bit too far. Oh, that sounds so mean and judgmental I know. My concern is when dressing turns into more of a costume approach it affects how people perceive you. The well presented person is usually the first to get the job, the first to find solid friendships and relationships and is often more respected. It's not really fair but as my momma told me, "life isn't fair".

I'm not saying you should dress like a banker. A little crazy goes a long way but there's a point of diminishing returns on alotta crazy!

Dress with originality and fun in mind (and keep the crazy at bay) and You'll Love What You Wear!

Happy Holidays

Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Andy Williams have all taken a turn singing "Happy Holidays". This hallmark holiday tune is probably one of the most popular and beloved seasonal melodies.

The funny thing about Frank, Bing and Andy is that they weren't only great singers but they knew how to dress! Well, of course they did, those were the good old days, right? Got To Get You Into My Life

The Beatles sang "Got To Get You Into My Life" in 1966. Every season seems to bring an article of clothing that leaves you saying the same thing.

Tie one on with a  sheerly
beautiful blouse!
There are so many lovely ultra feminine tops this season screaming to get into your closet and your life. They can have a 70's flair when they manifest themselves as tie blouses. Those without ties have less of a retro look. These sometimes silk and sometimes poly beauties are versatile and fun. Their sheer, flowing properties are a bit anti-Seattle- a refreshing break from fleece and wool! That makes the trend all the more alluring. There's always an occasion to up the femininity and lose the grunge.

Take advantage of this trend that looks equally beautiful at the office or with your favorite jeans. Get a feminine, flowy blouse into your life and You'll Love What You Wear!

You Wear it Well

This legging outfit is classy and modern at any age!
You've got to dig deep in the music archives to find Rod Stewart's "You Wear it Well" single. It was released in 1972. Oh, the 70's. Ironically that decade is alive and well now in the looks of Fall 2011. There's a resurgence of bell bottoms, bright colors, jumpsuits (yikes!), maxi dresses, leather and fur. But the real question, especially with "push the envelope" styles, is can YOU wear it well?

This is always the conundrum. What can I get away with? One of the most common questions I hear is, "if I'm in my 40's, 50's or 60's can I wear leggings?". Leggings are such a comfortable, fun and modern look, most anyone can pull them off. Just be careful what you pair with them. A nice riding boot or flat with a tunic sweater and leggings is appropriate for any age or figure. Leggings paired with a high heel get into a "nightclub look" that almost no one beyond 25 can get away with. And who doesn't want to cover their bum, saggy knees and cankles? It seems like the legging/boot combo might just be made for the "mature" woman!

You can wear it well even when you push your comfort zone a bit. Wear it with confidence ("own it") and good judgement and You'll Love What You Wear!

Something In The Way She Moves

James Taylor, one of my all time faves sang "Something In The Way She Moves" in 1973. Not only do I love JT but I love this song. I love it because it conjures up that woman you know who just seems to have it all. She's pretty and well dressed, in her own signature style, but above all she has confidence and charisma, the best accessories you can don!

I knew a woman who had all these things- Teisha. I didn't know her well. I did go on a fabulous week long vacation with her  and ten others when I was young and single in the 90's. We had the time of our lives. We all got to know Teisha's infectious laugh and amazing singing voice. Years later I bought my first home in Portland with my friend Rick and Teisha was our fabulous Real Estate agent. She was our counselor, our friend, our mentor and our driver! She was a delight- there was something in the way she moved. Rick and I looked forward to our drives through Portland with Teisha. It was kind of sad when we finally found our house and had to say goodbye to those drives.

She went on to start her own band and her beautiful voice was heard by many. She died last Thursday. But those who knew her fleetingly and those who knew her well will always remember there was just something in the way she moved.

Any Way You Want It

Asymmetrical and belted?
You better own it!
Just the mere mention of Journey's "Any Way You Want it" will have you singing the song in your head ALL day (sorry!). This little jewel of a tune was released all the way back in 1980- seems like just yesterday to some of us!

I love the concept of "any way you want it" when it comes to personal style. I was out with some lovely, fashion forward ladies last night and we started talking about "what's in" this season. As I always say I love following what's in but it's a slippery slope. Fit and "owning" what you're wearing are the most important things. This idea of "owning" came up when we discussed belts. Oh, the belt. It's so cute and so scary to belt your tunic, dress or sweater. Most of us fear it but when it's done well it is fabulous. As we discussed it one of the women said, "wearing a belt is like wearing a hat, you've got to own it". Well, isn't that the truth?

When you wear it any way you want it AND you own it You'll Love What You Wear!

Old Brown Shoe

A new look for the Old Brown Shoe!
The Beatles released "Old Brown Shoe" in 1967. It was a B-side tune. I know many of us have some old brown shoes in our closets that  should be relegated to the ""B-side". Luckily this season is full of super duper menswear inspired brown shoes that will have you dumping your old brown shoes in the nearest donation bin.

Korn, the hard core (I saw them live once and was very scared) band did a cover of the Beatles "Old Brown Shoe" decades after it's original release. May I suggest you too take a look at a new "Brown Shoe Release" in your own closet. Miz Mooz has some great versions of the "brown shoe". You don't have to form a scary band to cover a great classic. Throw some menswear inspired shoes in the mix this Fall and you'll Love What You Wear!

Time To Clean Up

Oh, you don't know this wildly popular song? Well the artist and release date are unknown but it goes a little something like this (and can be heard in preschools across the land):

Don't let your closet look like this! Time To Clean Up!
It's time to clean up, everybody do your share, clean up, clean up, soon the mess will not be there...

Well, cleaning up isn't just for preschooler's anymore people. It's time to clean up those closets and make room for Fall. It's such a fun time of year, meeting up with your jeans, leggings, sweaters and boots again. To make sure you can actually SEE your coolest fall pieces you've got to get rid of the things you didn't wear last Fall. You KNOW which pieces I'm talking about. Don't kid yourself, you're not going to wear them this year either. There's a reason they sit there all alone, untouched year after year. They don't fit right, you don't feel comfortable in them, they're just plain unattractive. Out with the dregs so you can concentrate on the winners.

'Tis the season to wake up and clean up and you'll Love What You Wear!

Every Little Thing She Does is Magic

It was 1981 and the Police had a huge hit with "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic". We all remember the song and we all know women with that magical style. How do they do it? How do they know just what to wear on any occasion, even if it's just when you run into them at a grocery store or the post office? Who doesn't want that magic?

This polka dot dress is magic with pumps and
would be great with tights and boots too.
A Magical, "in" style that crosses seasons!
Every season, especially in the Fall, the fashionistas and designers come up with what's "in". This year the leather motorcycle jacket still lives, "midi" (calf-length) skirts and dresses are the rage, chunky sweaters worn with gauzy skirts are on most runways and lace, polka dots and mustard hues make frequent appearances on the fashion scene. All that being said I'm pretty sure the woman with that magical style takes all of this information with a grain of salt. Miss Magic is always on trend but knows when to say when! Fit is the ultimate magic! And while some may look fabulous in that midi style, I'm pretty sure the five foot crowd may have to take a pass on it! And I'm almost positive the plus-sized woman isn't going gaga for large polka dot prints.

Trust yourself and comfort level while keeping an eye on trends and you may just become the Miss Magic in the checkout line. Know thyself (and thy limits!) and you'll Love What You Wear!

Roll With It

The rolled up sleeve on this
dress creates a more hip, modern look
compared with the unrolled sleeve
It was 1995 and one of my favorite albums ever was released. The album was "(What's the Story) Morning Glory" by Oasis. If CD's weren't so durable my copy would surely have worn out! One of the great songs on the album was "Roll With It". As I was dressing this morning for the musical we call life, I couldn't help but hum "Roll With It" while rolling up my sleeves...

So, what about rolling up sleeves? I've been finding that a little sleeve rolling on jackets, woven shirts and dresses can create a better look. Often times a more modern appearance comes to fruition by "rolling with it". I have a chambray dress that I couldn't quite make work and voila after adding a cool belt and rolling up the sleeves- delightful!

Before you get rid of a jacket, top or dress you're on the fence about, roll with it and see where it takes you. It's worth a try and chances are it will help you Love What you Wear!

Made to be Broken

We've got to go back to the heyday for this one- well at least my heday! In 1986 Soul Asylum released "Made to be Broken". I suppose a lot of my peers (not me of course) were living by the adage that rules were made to be broken back in '86! When it comes to fashion are rules made to be broken or followed? I'm thinking there's not even a rule for the rules!

What's that rule about not wearing horizontal
stripes? These stripes are definitely working for her!
As several lovely ladies and myself spent the evening sipping and styling at a Style Cents party last evening the idea of fashion rules came up a lot. "What's the rule for this?", "What's the rule for that?". While there are some pretty hard and fast rules in fashion- no denim on denim, only wear linen in the summer, etc.- a large part of fashion is knowing what works for you. While a tall, slim friend of yours looks great in a turtle neck, you as a short, big busted woman do not. At the end of the day the rule is wear things that look good on you and stay away from things that don't. So that's easy, right? Well, not for everyone. Some people have a more aesthetically honed eye than others. If you don't feel comfortable making fashion choices, enlist the help of friends (or Style Cents!). The magic is knowing if you have "the eye" or not. But whatever you choose to wear make sure it fits well and reflects who you are- those are the most important rules!

Find that sweet spot of knowing when to follow the rules and when to break them. Then find a good fashion mentor and you'll Love What You Wear!

Afternoon Delight

Ha! I've got your attention now. Perhaps you recall the 1976 hit "Afternoon Delight" and your mom suggesting (or demanding!) that the radio be turned off. While the Starland Vocal Band wasn't singing about anything close to thrift shopping that is the afternoon delight I am suggesting you partake in this summer. Play hooky some weekday or weekend afternoon while you should be working at the office or home. Grab a couple of adventurous shopping buddies and hit the streets!

My favorite thrift store- Frenzi in Burien.
You never know what you'll find on your thrifting adventure. I know many thrifting converts who were initially apprehensive but now delighted with the process. It can be an acquired taste but sometimes a necessity in this economy.

Here's the plan. Find a general area where you can hit two or three stores. If the first doesn't provide you with the delights you're looking for you'll need plan b and c so your afternoon isn't a bust. Whether you head to Burien, Ballard or Bellevue, do your homework and plot your course. Remember, don't buy it just because it's inexpensive. Seattle home closet space is usually a fraction of what we long for so be choosey about how to fill that precious real estate. At the same time don't let the dingy environment cloud your vision of the treasure you may be holding in your hand. And once you find your favorite haunt(s) check back often.

When your afternoon is full of fashion, fun and frugality you'll Love What You Wear (and be delighted)!

White Wedding

 Look Mom, "no bra!"
We all remember Billy Idol's hit in 1982- "White Wedding". Funny thing about weddings- they aren't always so white anymore. I love how pretty much anything goes. Any colors, any venue, anytime! But one thing has remained the same, everyone at weddings, from the bride and groom to all the guests, wants to look fantastic.

If you're going to be in a wedding, at a wedding or attempting to crash a wedding this summer make sure you have Hollywood Fashion Tape on hand. This tape can fix most any problem. Have a bra that slips away from your dress strap or a neckline that skims the top of your bra a bit too close? This tape will help keep your bra hidden away. It's also great for asymmetrical and strapless style dresses, making sure the dress is secured to your bra so it doesn't show. Remember that guests have come to see the bride and groom at the wedding, not your bra!

The next wedding you attend may not be a White Wedding but make sure it's not a Janet Jackson Super  Bowl experience either. Have your Hollywood Fashion Tape on hand and You'll Love What You Wear!

Firework

Oh, what a timely tune. Katy Perry's addictive song  "Firework" is a reminder to all to look hot at your 4th of July shindig! So what can you do to look festive without wearing a flag t-shirt or a sweatshirt with an appliqued fireworks show? Oh, I know you'd never do that but I couldn't resist. Kind of an ode to the "holiday dresser" we've all known.

A rare example of incorporating ALL
the holiday colors that works!
Obviously wearing red, white and blue isn't necessary but it is kind of fun to incorporate one or two of the colors for the day- why not? It only happens once a year after all. Using red sparingly can be a very classy way to partake in the festive nature of the day. A light, summer scarf with lots of red or red shoes give a bit of holiday pop without overdoing it (never wear them together!). Pair the red shoes OR the red scarf with a chambray top and you're in!  The nautical navy and white striped look would be a perfect thing to pull out on the 4th as well. Throw on some white bermuda shorts and voila- Happy 4th of July!

Find your firework outfit this year and make sure to keep it subtle. When you do you'll Love What You Wear!

Summertime!

You can start your summertime
look with this $35 dress
from Old Navy
Oh, yes...we all remember DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince's big hit in 1991- Summertime! And summertime is coming. It's officially here tomorrow. Summertime is a chance for you to take on a fresh fashion perspective. I'm not suggesting you follow the Fresh Prince's fashion lead but something fresh for YOU.

Have you always wanted to wear white pants but feared them? There's a pair for you! Want to sport a fun and flirty summer frock? You can do it. Breakup the old shorts and t-shirt routine. As the season changes give your closet some changes too. There's no need to break the bank to get a fresh look going. Many of the items you have in your closet will mix right in. Head to Target or Old Navy for a summer dress and pair it with a cardigan you already own for those cool Seattle nights. Maybe your favorite consignment store has some summer nuggets waiting for you?

The sun is coming and it's time to ask WWLF? Hmmm...What Would Look Fresh on you this summer? Once you find your styling summertime sizzle You'll Love What You Wear!

Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes

These could be yours for
$69.95 (at Zappos)
I LOVE this song almost as much as I love shoes! The genius Paul Simon released "Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes" in 1986. Feels like I've been looking for the perfect summer sandal since then! Oh, to find that diamond in the rough.

The biggest struggle with the summer sandal search is finding something that is versatile enough to wear with your bermuda shorts, skirts, crop pants and summer dresses. Where are they? What should you look for? Style Cents suggests the two to three inch wedge as a solid option for these reasons:

1. Comfortable
2. Versatile- can be dressed up or down
3. Many wedge styles to choose from

The big trend this year is the nude sandal- you just can't go wrong with a nude wedge. Perhaps you feel more comfortable in the more classic black or brown- that works too, of course. And the more brave among you can do a cool orange, yellow, hot pink or avocado green. Oh, how I admire the adventurous show wearer- kudos to you!
Shoe sales and coupons are everywhere! Check out endless.comdsw.compiperlime.comzappos.comshoebuy.com....and the list goes on and on! For brick and mortar options Style Cents loves West Seattle's Clementine Shoes as well as a good shoe odyssey at Marshall's and The Rack. Let the hunt commence!

This summer Love the Sandal You Wear!

Father of Mine

Could the Father in your
life look like this?
Whatever happened to Everclear anyway? Back in 1997 they released "Father of Mine". It was about the lead singer's father who left when he was a kid. But I'm going to just refer to the title and pretend it's a happy song. So with that in mind, what about that father of yours? Got any great ideas for father's day this year? Let's face it, buying a gift for the patriarch in your life is never an easy task. But wait, hold the presses, I have a fantastic idea!

Okay, okay, shameless Style Cents promotion once again! Get the father in your life something that fits, looks great on them and involves spending a few hours focused solely on him! What could be better? Style Cents has gift certificates for your dad, your husband, your son, your brother- all the fathers in your life!

I have done a Style Cents Wardrobe Analysis with men in the past and not only did the men enjoy it and end up with great closets and style ideas, their wives were thrilled with the results too. So wonder no more about what to get that father of yours (or husband of yours). The old saying that "ain't nobody's happy if mama ain't happy" is actually true but there's nothing wrong with a stylish, confident daddy either. It's sure to make him happy and certainly will help him say, "I Love What I Wear"!

The Arms of an Angel

In 1997 Sarah Mclachlan released "In the Arms of an Angel", it was an immediate hit. The song was off her now famous"Surfacing" album. Perhaps it's time for you to bring some of your old bracelets to the surface and add some new ones as well.  Wear some arm candy and look like an angel!

Anthropologie has some beautiful bracelet options as do some less obvious places like thrift and consignment stores. Looking for some less expensive knock offs? Give Target and Old Navy a try. Mix and match your bracelets. Try pairing feminine styles with more rugged leather types. You can create your own angelic arm art!

Bracelets are a great option when your outfit doesn't make sense with a necklace- give your arm some bling instead. Whatever you choose make sure your arm decor reflects your angelic (or less than angelic) personality and you'll Love What You Wear!

I Can't Smile without You

Oh, Barry Manilow. I remember the release of "I Can't Smile Without You" in 1977 like it was yesterday. I also remember spending all my allowance to get his Live album that same year. Oh, simpler times. It should also be noted that in 1977 I didn't have the need for lip gloss but nowadays I must admit I can't smile without my go-to lipgloss!

I was reminded today of my love for my favorite lip product. As I reached into my purse to apply my lipgloss on the fly I was horrified to find only a couple applications remaining! So, smiling may just be history for me unless I get to Nordstrom (or order online) stat and replenish my Laura Mercier violet gloss or as Laura calls it glace. Not only does this super duper lip gloss look great but it also moisturizes these 44 year old lips quite nicely! The holy grail of lip stuff to be sure.

What lip product makes you smile? Inquiring lips need to know!

I can't smile without my favorite lip gloss and it always fits- how convenient! The right lip gloss or stick can definitely help you Love What You Wear!

Ain't No Sunshine

Whad'ya know? Bill Withers strikes again (truthfully I hadn't even heard of the guy before I wrote Monday's post) singing "Ain't No Sunshine". He wrote and sang the hit in 1971 and quite frankly we Seattleites feel like there hasn't been sunshine since then! What Mr. Withers didn't tell us in his song is that when there ain't no sunshine you've got to layer!
This "Prairie Underground Rain
Cloak" will certainly add sunshine
 to an otherwise rainy day

That's right folks, when in doubt layer some more. It adds interest and warmth especially when there ain't no sunshine. And it's probably time to go ahead and invest in an attractive rain resistant jacket of some kind. A non-logoed variety is preferable. It can be a long search but when you find one you love it will add a little sunshine to an otherwise dreary Seattle day.

So go ahead layer with a t-shirt, then a long sleeve shirt or sweater, then a scarf, then that cute new coat you're going to get. You never know when the sun will come out- carry a big bag so you can take off a layer and throw it in there. It's really Seattleites who are prepared not boy scouts! I imagine Seattle boy scouts are REALLY prepared! Go forth with layers and preparation and You'll Love What You Wear!

When a Man Loves a Woman

WARNING: Shameless Style Cents Plug

This Man Loves a Woman
and the Style Cents Mannequin!
Okay, with the warning out of the way let's chat about the oldie but goodie tune "When a Man Loves a Woman" sung so beautifully in 1966 by Percy Sledge. We all remember it and we all know lots of men love "their woman". From my post at Style Cents I've also noticed that when a man loves a woman he can get nervous about the money she spends on clothes!

Well, many of you may be wondering how could said woman cut back on her clothing budget? And if she did would her man love her more? I can answer the first question, the second is for another professional.

I have had more than one man comment about how much money has been saved when their bride chooses to get a Style Cents Wardrobe Analysis. How can this be you ask? It is amazing what can happen when a knowledgable third party- Style Cents- comes in to your closet and finds what needs to go and what should stay. When that process is over fabulous clothing combinations are created with the remaining pieces and pure magic happens. One aspect of the magic is you now have less but you have SO much more to wear. Clutter is reduced and style is increased. Told ya it was magic! And Style Cents leaves you with a targeted shopping list so that when you do choose to invest in your wardrobe you are focused and spend your time and money wisely.

So, really the moral of the story is When a Man Loves a Woman he purchases a Style Cents Wardrobe Analysis for her (it should be noted sometimes the man needs a nudge from the woman he loves to do this). When you get your Style Cents Wardrobe Analysis you will most certainly Love What You Wear!

Use Me

You may not recall the soulful Bill Withers tune from 1972 called "Use Me" (you would if you heard it- google it!)  but you can still heed this singer's advice. When you look around your home, in your closets and drawers there are many secret treasures lurking, just screaming, "USE ME"!

This ring would definitely scream
"use me" from your mom's jewelry box
Perhaps an old leather jacket that hasn't seen the light of day since 1982 has another life left in it? Does the bracelet your mom gave you for your birthday decades ago now make sense again? Certainly your grandma's necklace will add charm to your outfit du jour! All these lost treasures give your look personality and individuality. But be careful with jewelry and clothing from the past, you'll almost always want to pair them with modern, perhaps even trendy pieces. This will ensure your look is not dated but funky and fun!

Go ahead...I dare you...dig something fun out of your closet, your mom's closet, your husband's closet, or a  local thrift store. Add some originality to your look by listening to the faint "use me" coming from the attic and you'll Love What you Wear!

Forever in Blue Jeans

You knew it was coming. A song about jeans sung by one of the greatest (and cheesiest) artists of our time? Yep. Done. Neil Diamond had it right when he sang about being "Forever in Blue Jeans". It is, after all, a viable option today with all the cool styles available.
Got Jeans?

Jeans are the cornerstone of most anyone's wardrobe, especially if you live in Seattle. The idea that jeans are just to be casual is a bit dated. If you wear a pair of dark wash jeans with a dressy top and great heels or boots you may be forever remembered by your date (in a good way, of course)! You could wake up the next day and head to your son's soccer game or your niece's t-ball tournament and sport skinny jeans with cool rain boots (it is Seattle!) and a hip rain jacket. Once you come home and dry off those skinny jeans you can pair them with a dressy platform and a trendy lace top and be out for yet another date! Most people can even wear jeans to work. There has never been a time when so many jean styles are readily accessible. And there is a perfect style (or two, or three) for you! Experiment- don't get caught in a rut. Try the skinny jean- REALLY! You might be surprised. And the boyfriend jean with the bottoms rolled up once or twice- hello spring! The classic straight leg trouser jean- understated sexy! Buy them for a little, buy them for a lot. Buy them new or let someone else wear them in and pick them up at a consignment shop or thrift store.

It's 2011 people and there's never been a better time to be forever in blue jeans! When you have a selection of perfect fitting, stylish jeans in your wardrobe you'll definitely Love What You Wear!

These Boots are Made for Walking

We all know the Nancy Sinatra hit single from 1966, "These Boots are Made for Walking". If there's anything I love it's a great pair of boots and if they're made for (comfortable) walking then it's practically a dream come true.
These can help your boots
and jeans be made for walking!

Once you have a pair of boots that are stylish and made for walking, what happens when you tuck your jeans into your boots? Well, some boots are made for jean stuffing and some are not! If you have spent too many mornings working overtime trying to stuff your skinny jeans into your boots, only to find them bunching up as soon as you take a step, there just may be a solution. Enter the amazingly simple and astonishingly effective pant clip. They are a lot like sheet clips used to keep sheets in place on mattresses. There is nothing sexy or cool about these pant clips but they just may save you some time and frustration next time you want to take those boots walking without those pants bunching! When you "clip your pants" and don your boots you are much more likely to Love What You Wear!

Safety Dance

When Men Without Hats sang "Safety Dance" in the 80's they couldn't have imagined the safety dance we all do as we groove through airport security lines for the sake of all our safety. But wow, it sure does mess with our fashion!

Choosing an airport friendly outfit takes a lot of forethought when you consider that you'll be doing at least one safety dance on your journey. What shoes to wear that are easily taken on and off. And accessories? What a commitment! You've got to really love that necklace if you're going to commit to the on and off dance process. As I was doing the safety dance at a recent airport I was asked to take off my scarf- I mean heaven knows what I might have hidden in that thing! As I was taking it off I told the head dancer that I would never be able to replicate the fabulous scarf configuration currently hugging my chilly neck. That old dancer didn't even crack a smile, didn't even care about the perfect knot I'd created in the wee hours of the morning only to have it destroyed. Oh, well, I smiled for him and proceeded on with my fabulous safety moves. I will say, however, I was correct- I wasn't able to replicate my earlier master piece with as much scarf flair. Probably because I was too busy putting my shoes back on, making sure my precious iphone was still with me and of course making sure the kids were still in the dance party!

I'm grateful for the security provided at airports and I enjoy thinking about how to beat the safety dance with a great and safety resistant outfit- I still haven't perfected it. The next time you are suited up for an airport safety dance, just hum the tune and know those great accessories will be of better use later in your trip, then you'll really Love What You Wear!

You Are My Sunshine

With any luck your "sunshine" won't turn out like this!
Everyone remembers singing "You Are My Sunshine" when they were kids. It was originally recorded in 1939 by the Pine Ridge Boys and has been recorded by many others through the years. Our ideas about sun have changed as many times as the recording artists singing this song . If you were born in 1939 you heard a different story about the sun than you did if you were born in 1999 (didn't Prince sing a song about that year?).

Enter the age of self tanners, tanning booths and spray tanning. What to do when you're a white whitey and want some color, especially when headed to a beach vacation? As I write this I have lots of color from an air brush tanning session. It's amazing how color can change the way you look. I also have to admit there is an orange hue to it but I have high hopes it will settle into a nice looking tan. The airbrush method beats the booth spray tan by miles- it's much more exacting and doesn't have any drip lines. I do believe airbrush spray tanning IS my sunshine of choice. Now I have to remember that I don't really have a tan and apply LOTS of sunscreen when out in the real sun!

Before you decide your choice of "sunshine" ask friends what they've done in the past to emulate that sun kissed look ala Jennifer Anniston not George Hamilton! The most important thing is to stay out of the real sunshine so as not to look like the handbag on your arm. A little color can definitely help you Love What You Wear !

Short Shorts

In 1958 a band named The Royal Teens asked the question "Who Wears short Shorts?" I've got to tell you I'm asking the same question in 2011! Who does wear short shorts? Do short people wear short shorts? Or are short shorts only for tall people? Can women over 40 wear short shorts or are they only for the young(er)?

Everyone knows politics and religion shouldn't be discussed at a party. I'm not so sure short shorts should be discussed either. It can be as divisive as an immigration law chat or an evolution dialogue. Yikes! Just to be clear I'm on the side of bermuda shorts after 40 and I much prefer fun summer dresses and skirts to any type of shorts. They're more comfortable, more feminine and usually more flattering. Lots of women can go an entire Seattle winter without even thinking of a dress or skirt- a summer frock can be quite liberating (and for the dress lover, quite exciting!)

I realize there is no right or wrong answer to the great short shorts debate. I would, however, suggest that those who love short shorts dabble in donning a stylish sporty or flirty dress this summer. You may find that the answer to "who wears short shorts" is "not me". When the warm temperatures finally get here, reach into your closet and take age and body type into consideration before deciding who wears short shorts. No matter what your decision make sure you Love What You Wear!

It's Tricky

Who doesn't want ruching on their swimsuit?!
At the risk of putting a song in your head that you'll never get out, I have to remind you of the Run DMC song "It's Tricky". When I hear them singing "it's tricky, tricky, tricky" I can't help but think of the trickiest fashion feature ever- the almighty ruching!

It's tricky alright! I wish all my clothes were ruched. Talk about hiding a multitude of sins- it's pure magic. Houdini has nothing on ruching! If you haven't had the pleasure of owning a ruched top or dress I highly suggest you give it a try. Ruching provides lots of interest and style while giving you loads of confidence.

When in doubt- ruche and you'll Love What You Wear!

Leather and Lace

A perfectly versatile lace top
I must admit I loved the 1981 Stevie Nicks/Don Henley duet "Leather and Lace". Proof positive that the more things change the more they stay the same. Flash forward to 2011 and I am now loving the new leather and lace spring fashions.

This season is filled with fun lace and leather clothing that can fit into anyone's wardrobe. You can incorporate leather and lace in lots of ways- lace vests, tops, skirts and dresses are all great choices. And leather vests, jackets and belts add playful juxtaposition to the lace! Just make sure you choose pieces that best reflect your style. Lace can easily slide into a Madonna look and leather to a biker persona. Know thyself and shop accordingly!

So pick a couple leather and/or lace favorites this spring. Pair your new pieces with clothing you already own for a modern, timely look that makes good Style Cents! No need to break the bank to partake in the latest look- it can be easy and inexpensive to Love What You Wear!

Umbrella

Riahanna doesn't need an umbrella with this hairstyle
Sure Rihanna sings about her "Umbrella" but we Seattleites are living the Umbrella dream (or is that a nightmare?). But funny thing about umbrellas and Seattle- most people who live in Seattle don't carry one. It's easy to spot a recent transplant or visitor- it's the person carrying an umbrella!

So what does a seasoned Seattleite do to combat the rain in lieu of carrying an umbrella? Be the rain baby! Just as a good boy scout is always prepared so is a savvy fashionista. My philosophy is everyone should have a good rainy day hair plan. If you normally blow your hair dry to silky, straight perfection and find yourself out and about on a rainy day you'll find the perfection soon turns to perfectly frizzy! So, what if you worked with the rain instead of against it? Very zen don't you think?

Be armed with a curly or wavy hair look  and frizz defense hair products for those less than dry days. It will save you time, frustration, and the worry of carrying a silly old umbrella (umbrellas are SO California!). Be prepared and Love What You Wear- even your hair!
